South Beach Diet

For those who wish to shed off their excess weight in a healthy and delicious way, we have now one of the most popular weight-loss diet plan called the South Beach Diet. The diet program was formulated in the year 2003 by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston.   “The South Beach Diet Plan: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Program for Fast and Wholesome Excess Weight Loss” is Dr. Agatson’s best-selling book. The South Beach Diet is a commercial weight-loss diet plan. This extremely popular diet plan is named after a stunning area of Miami.  This diet plan does not require carb counting and neither a low-carbohydrate or a low-fat diet plan. However, it is lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein and wholesome fats compared to the typical diet plans.

Low-carb diet is a diet that limits your carbohydrates to about 20% of the daily calorie intake. But with South Beach Diet, you can get as much as 28% of your daily calories from carbohydrates that is the reason why it is called a modified low-carbohydrate diet plan. The South Beach Diet declares that it is rich in nutrient and fiber diet plan that you can follow. It also claims that you can eliminate “bad” carbs that have high glycemic index. Meaning, meals with a high glycemic index will increase your blood sugar faster, higher and longer than with meals with a lower index. It is proven that blood sugar can increase your appetite that leads you to eat more resulting to excess weight gain, diabetes and heart disease. It will make you aware about various forms of fats and will encourage you to limit unhealthy trans-fats and saturated fats and eat more foods with healthier monounsaturated fats. It also gives emphasis to the benefits of fiber and whole grains and suggests to include lots fruits and vegetables in your diet.

There are known side effects that can pose to your health eventually. Restricting carbohydrates to less than 20 grams a day will result in ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis happens once you don’t have enough sugar or glucose for energy, thus, your body breaks down stored fat which will cause unhealthy levels of ketones and acid to increase within your body.  It may result in coma and even death if left untreated.

As you can sere, any diet plan isn’t tailored for your specific needs including your weight-loss goals and several health conditions you have. Thus, it is important for you to consult with your doctor before following any diet plan.
